From a Christian perspective, our true self, this reality of who we are to be, precedes our actual life because it exists in the eternal love-will of God before we exist. In other words, we are created, not just once but continually in what we call grace, for a purpose and meaning that predates us. Only by living into that “self-to-be” will we have lived meaningfully.

This implies that we are not able to choose the purpose for our lives. We do not get to select the meaning of our existence any more than we can choose the fact of it. We are thrust into a life we did not ask for, and find its true meaning already established. Greg Newton
